Samsung Captures the Highest Global Market Shares
in Television Sales Revenue – 14% and in Overall Television Units Sold – 10.6%
Thailand, February 28 2007 – The market research company, DisplaySearch, recently reported that Samsung sold more television sets and earned more revenue from television sales than any other company in 2006. This marks the first time that Samsung has held the distinction of being the world’s top television business since the giant electronics company began selling televisions 34 years ago.
Mr. Kwang Kee Park, Managing Director of Thai Samsung Electronics was extremely pleased at Samsung’s excellent showing, “It is clearly a great achievement for Samsung to be number one in the world in both revenue and actual units for the first time in 34 years. This year, we will maintain our lead too, as we have set our sales targets of LCD TVs at 11 million units, Plasma TVs at 3 million units, and total overall sales at 24 million units.”
Samsung achieved its top status by selling more of its LCD TV, Plasma TV and Brown tube TV (CRT) consolidated units than any other electronics company, capturing 14% of the total market in terms of sales revenue. This total was significantly higher than the company with the next highest revenue from television sales, Sony, which represented 11.3% of the market, and LG with 8.6%, while other companies such as Panasonic and Philips lingered behind.
Based on the unit sales of actual televisions, Samsung Electronics sold 10.6% of the worldwide total, LG sold 9.8% and China’s TTE was next with 9.4%.
In each television category, Samsung fared well against the competition in terms of market share. While Sony earned the most from its LCD TV sales, taking 16% of the market share, it was closely followed by Samsung with 15% and Sharp at 11.5%. Panasonic earned 29% of all revenue made from Plasma TV sales, LG earned 16% and Samsung captured 14% of the market share. And TTE (which has been bought by France’s Thomson) had the highest market share of all of CRTs sold with 12%, but Samsung was close behind with 11% of revenues from sales of its CRTs.
Locally, in Thailand, Samsung had a great year in 2006 with a leading market share on LCD TVs in terms of sales revenue at 34.4% and 34.7% on all sales units.
