Senators seek talks with King’s secretary to clarify Visut’s status
Published on September 07, 2005 - Four senators yesterday asked for a meeting with His Majesty the King’s Principal Private Secretary to break the deadlock over the nomination of a new auditor-general, for which His Majesty has withheld approval for three months.
Meanwhile, Senate Speaker Suchon Chaleekrua vowed to set up an ad-hoc panel to axe the senators who sought the meeting, saying they might be overriding His Majesty’s royal powers.
Winyu Urankul, Gen Somkid Srisangkhom, Seri Suwanpanont and Nirun Phitakwatchara sent a letter to Asa Sarasin, His Majesty’s Principal Private Secretary, to clarify the status of the nomination of Visut Montriwat as auditor-general, replacing Khunying Jaruvan Maintaka.
“As the Senate speaker, Suchon Chaleekrua has failed to clarify the issue. It’s better to ask His Majesty’s Secretary,” Winyu said, adding that he sent the letter on Friday but hadn’t received a response yet.
The Constitution Court ruled in June last year that the selection of Jaruvan as auditor-general was unconstitutional, despite the fact she had served in the post for two years.
Suchon recently admitted that he submitted Visut’s nomination to replace Jaruvan on June 10 – 90 days ago today. The delay is regarded as unusual for a royal approval, which normally takes a few weeks at most.
In the meantime, Suchon said he would set up a special committee to scrutinise the move of the four senators.
Meanwhile, General Wattana Sanpanich said that all senators attempting to meet with Asa should stop, warning that according to tradition, nobody could ask His Majesty to report to them on any issue. To do so would be to override His Majesty’s royal powers, he said.
