Korn suggests "micro finance" to help the poor

Finance Minister Korn Chatikavanij

Bank of Thailand's second master plan on financial institutions development is scheduled for the Cabinet's approval in the fourth quarter of this year, with the focus in widening and deepening the public access to funding.

Finance Minister Korn Chatikavanij, said after the discussion with the central bank's deputy governor Bandid Nijathaworn on Friday, that at present, about 20 per cent of consumers are seeking funds from the unorganised market and 1 in 10 have no access to fund. It's the central bank's task to improve this matter, he said.

"Micro finance could be one option to improve the access to funding for the low-income earners. This could be done through existing financial institutions, which could adopt the Bank of Thailand's "people's bank concept". Or, we could establish a specialised organisation. Both have advantages and disadvantages. The master plan offers the leeway to apply any concept," he said.
