Baht not to weaken to Bt36 against dollar

Thai baht will never weaken to as much as Bt36 per US dollar this year, said Bank of Thailand Governor Tarisa Watanagase.

She also insisted that the Thai baht has strengthened due mainly to the continued weakening in US dollar. Moreover, the appreciation is in the reasonable level compared to that of the currencies of trade partners and competitors.

In the first quarter of this year, Thai baht strengthened 4 per cent against the greenback compared to 16-17 per cent in some other currencies, she noted.

Former Deputy Prime Minister Olarn Chaipravat said last weekend that if the baht weakened to Bt36 per dollar, it would help boost the export sector and raise domestic purchasing power.
