Literary legend Rong dies at 77

National Artist in Literature Rong Wongsavun died yesterday evening at the age of 77 at Chiang Mai's Theppanya Hospital after a serious illness.

Rong, or Narong, was admitted to the hospital last Friday to treat bleeding of the brain stem.

His heartbeat was erratic and stopped momentarily before he died.

Dr Nopporn Niwattananant, director of the hospital's medical department, told a press conference that a team of physicians had to pump his heart three times due to heart failure and weak pulse.

He was an author in various genres. His unique and outstanding style has influenced both readers and writers alike. His works were based on his own experiences and those of people whom he lived with.

Narong used "Rong Wongsavun" as his nom de plume.

Narong's family is waiting for his youngest son, Sarerngrong, who has left the US and will arrive at 4pm today.

The medical team tried very hard but did not succeed in prolonging his life so he could see Sarerngrong for the last time.
