Phuket village expects revenue drop on crisis

The administrative body of Tambon Sakhoo, Thalang district of Phuket, expects its revenue in the 2009 fiscal year to fall below the target of Bt59 million.

"Last year, we collected Bt40 million and targeted to achieve Bt59 million this year. However, we expect a shortfall, due to the economic crisis as well as the cut in land transactions tax,"  said Surapong Panyawai, chief of the body.

He would soon propose a cut in unnecessary expenses. Most of the revenue comes from household taxes as well as taxes on banners. The tambon locates 5 large hotels and two medium-sized hotels, aside from several small resort and hotels. The economic crisis and low confidence following the airports closure has resulted in a sharp drop in tourists to the tambon, he said.

In the fiscal year, the tambon expects to spend Bt59 million; Bt7 million for the construction of a new kindergarten school and another 8 million for educational materials and staff salary. Other projects include the clean-up of Nai Yang Beach.
