Widow angry at murder court decision

The wife of environmentalist Charoen Wat-aksorn, who was shot dead in 2004, yesterday appealed against a Criminal Court decision to drop murder charges against two of five suspects in his murder.

Last week, the court dropped charges against Manoch Hinkaew, 42, and his 71-year-old father Jua Hinkaew on grounds of weak evidence, while handing down a death sentence to Manoch's elder brother Thanu Hinkaew.

Jua was a former kamnan of Tambon Bo Nok in Prachuap Khiri Khan. He is in detention pending appeal.

Charoen was gunned down reportedly because he led a protest against the construction of a power plant in Tambon Bo Nok. If the construction had gone ahead, Jua would have enjoyed huge profits.

Today, Charoen's wife Korn-uma Pongnoi is leading the protest against the power-plant construction.

Accompanied by 200 supporters, she called on Seksan Bansombooon - an executive director at the Office of the Attorney General - to file a complaint about the court's decision to clear Jua and Manoch of the charges.

Korn-uma also wanted public prosecutors to oppose any move for Jua's temporary release.

Seksan promised to look carefully into the case.
