Disease control

The Public Health Ministry will continue trying to control communicable diseases, which have already claimed many lives this year. So far, up to 89 people have died from dengue fever, 69 have succumbed to leptospiro¬sis and three have been killed by streptococcus suis.

"We have closely monitored some major diseases this year and will continue to do so next year," director of the Epidemiology Bureau, Kumnuan Unchusak, said yesterday.

Diseases under watch include dengue fever, lep¬tospirosis, streptococcus suis, measles, mumps, chickenpox, human influenza and pneumo¬nia.

According to Kamnuan, 6,463 people had measles this year - up from 3,800 last year. "The number of chickenpox patients also jumped from 63,000 last year to 71,000 this year," he pointed out, adding that many of these afflictions had vaccines.

"In 2009, we plan to get two million people, especially those in risky groups and aged over 65, vaccinated against human influenza," Kumnuan said.

So far this year, 500,000 people have been vaccinated against human influenza.
