What's Expected This Week

The focus this week is on the forming of a new coalition government, although the date for the prime minister's election has not been decided.

Parties joining the coalition change all the time and the two major parties, Democrat and Pheu Thai, bluff each other that each has more MPs backing it. Both claim they could lead a coalition government.

After negotiations and a war of words, the judgement would be made at the House session to elect the prime minister.

Today, the opposition Democrat Party is preparing to submit signatures of a third of the House MPs to Parliament President Chai Chidchob, seeking a House session to elect a prime minister.

Chai must submit the petition to his Majesty the King for a Royal Decree to open the session.

Nevertheless, the status of proportionate MPs of the dissolved People Power Party is still in question. Forty senators last week filed a petition seeking a Constitution Court ruling on whether the status of party-list MPs of the three parties can be maintained, and if a caretaker prime minister must be a member of Parliament.

On Saturday afternoon, the former People Power Party's supporters - the Democratic Alliance Against Dictatorship - has scheduled a rally at Supachalasai Stadium.

Former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra is expected to phone-in and address his supporters.

Thaksin's ex-wife Khunying Pojaman and his children are now back in Thailand, and the People Power Party has been dissolved.

DAAD co-leader Veera Musigapong said the rally would be held to express their opposition to all kinds of dictatorship or breach of the Constitution. He said even if the Democrats lead the government, they would accept it if it was constitutional.

The group vowed to fight back if the military staged a coup.

DAAD had earlier scheduled a rally to Parliament when the House session to elect a prime minister was expected today. It said it would protect MPs from any other group's blockade from doing their job. The group has now cancelled the rally but said it would reconsider its position if any group obstructed the House session.
