Thai gov to aid stranded foreigners - Philippine envoy

Manila, Philippines - Stranded foreign tourists in Thailand, including Filipinos, will get 2,000 baht a day from the Thai government for every day that the airport is not operational, the Philippine's envoy there said Friday.

Ambassador to Bangkok Antonio Rodriguez told INQUIRER.net, "This should be enough to cover food and accommodation."

Rodriguez disclosed the information in an overseas call after a meeting with Thailand's Ministry of Foreign Affairs Thursday night.

The ambassador said this should ease the financial burden of the 144 Filipinos who have sought the embassy's help due to the ongoing standoff at the Thai airport, and his own worries about where to get the money to help them.

Rodriguez had written the Department of Foreign Affairs asking permission to disburse funds to help stranded Filipinos who don't have any friends and relatives in Thailand get through the crisis

Rodriguez said Philippine embassy staff would coordinate with those who would want to avail of the 2,000 baht per day allowance. He said the stranded Filipinos should present their passports and airline tickets.

Filipino travelers requiring assistance or further information are advised to contact the Philippine Embassy in Bangkok at (+662)2590139
