Chai's decision met with mixed response
House Speaker Chai Chidchob has postponed Parliament meeting indefinitely till the situation returns to normal after the People's Alliance for Democracy besieged the House on Monday morning, Parliament secretary-general Pitoon Pumhiran said on Monday.
Chai's decision was met with both applauds and stiff criticism. While some law makers hailed his decision as helping the country escape a bloodbath, others said his decision came too late and the fact showed he was just playing a political game under the order of the big shot.
Pitoon said the agenda to be deliberated on Monday in the joint session include treaties that the government would ratify during ASEAN meeting in Chiang Mai in December as required by Article 190 of the Constitution, municipal draft bill, provincial administrative organization draft bill, tambon administrative organization draft bill.
People Power Party whip led by Withaya Buranasri, deputy House Speaker Apiwan Wiriyachai questioned who would be held responsible for the damage if the country cannot ratify those treaties. They raise the issue in a press conference after Chai postponed the House meeting,
Pitoon quoted Chai as saying he would decide when the next meeting would be held after the government, the Opposition and the Senate including the PAD agreed upon.
Early before the meeting could begin, some MPs and Senators tried to enter Parliament such as Senator Prasong Nurak, Democrat Party leader Abhisit Vejjajiva but the PAD blocked them from going in.
Senate Speaker Prasopsuk Boondet and his deputies issued a statement backing Chai's decision to postpone joint House meeting and meeting place. The statement said the future House meeting should not include Constitution amendment in the agenda.
Somchai Sawaengkarn, a leader of the 40 Senators group said Chai should have made the decision before the PAD besiege Parliament and he should have changed the meeting place. "However it is lucky that the government did not crack down on the PAD,'' he said.
Democrat Party MP Boonyod Sukthinthai criticised Chai's delayed decision saying the House Speaker merely played political game and did not work independently.
Boonyod arrived Parliament since 8 am and after giving press interview he left the House from the exit on Uthong Nai Rd. The PAD clapped their hands in a show of support to him.
