At Cabinet meeting, Labour Minister Uraiwan Thienthong will propose a Bt1.536-billion package to set up 10 projects to help workers through the tough economic times.

Between January and August, 127,238 workers were laidoff from 11,598 businesses, and 5,300 more redundancies are predicted soon. Uraiwan said the measure would prevent at least 60,000 workers from losing their jobs.

The budget would cover a Bundit Asa employment proj¬ect covering 7,000 workers in the three southernmost provinces (Bt765.5 million), a Bt65.5million scheme to create new jobs for laidoff workers, and a Bt126million training scheme.

The Ministry will also table labour organisations' requests for Bt1 billion to set up a fund for the unemployed.
