The Supreme Court's Office for Political Office Holders has found forŽmer prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra guilty of conflict of interest in the Ratchadaphisek land deal and senŽtenced him to two years in prison. The landmark verdict, a fivetofour vote, brings the final curtain down on Thaksin's political career.
The Asia-Europe Meeting (Asem), which kicks off in Beijing today, is a good opportunity for leaders from Europe and Asia to demonstrate their resolve in dealing with the global financial crisis as well as hordes of other issues. Since Asem was found in 1995, the Beijing meeting will be the largest - with 43 countries and international organisations taking part - and most significant, as it comes at a time of great crisis.
We are now observing civil disobedience against an elected government that in turn is killing its own people on the streets in order to deliver its speech on time. These must be the works of the two evils, surely not by democracy advocates.
