Apirak has promises to keep

On Sunday, Bangkokians re-elected Apirak Kosayodhin as city governor with an increased majority. Now it is Apirak's duty to prove that the people have chosen the right man. Apirak won in all constituencies, even in some that were strongholds of the People Power Party in the last election.

Four years ago, Apirak made several promises to Bangkokians. He kept some, but there were a number that he failed to fulfil during his four-year term, including the introduction of BRT buses. This was largely due to conflict with the national government. Bangkokians nonetheless forgave him because they know that Bangkok traffic is "mission impossible".

Former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra once campaigned on the vow that he would end Bangkok's traffic chaos within six months. Thaksin did nothing and Bangkokians don't seem bothered by such broken promises.

As well as benefiting from the Democrat Party's support base in Bangkok, Apirak gained votes because city residents wanted the incumbent governor to carry on a number of policies. Apirak's campaign highlighted his vision that Bangkok can become a major international city. His vision promises a cleaner and more liveable capital city, and Bangkok voters connected with the goal.

What all Bangkok governors promise is too far reaching due to the limited responsibility of the job. But from now on, Apirak has to do his best under the scope of power assigned to him. Apirak says he will also make Bangkok an example on how public participation can highlight city development. That initiative is welcome indeed.

This gubernatorial election has sent a positive signal on political development, as all the candidates highlighted policies instead of personal issues, and that's the reason for the good turnout. Now, more than 900,000 Apirak voters will be watching to see if he is able to keep his policy promises over the next four years.
