Situation returns to normalcy at Thai, Cambodian border

The Thai Foreign Ministry announced Friday that the situation at the border near Phra Viharn returned to normalcy following a clash between a Thai military unit and Cambodian troops in the afternoon.

Tharit Charungvat, Director-General of the Department of Information and Spokesman of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a press conference that the clash happened at around 3:45 pm.

He said a Thai military unit patrolling the areas from Kharn Ma Pass to Phu Makhua, located approximately one kilometre west of Phra Viharn, encountered a Cambodian military unit that had encroached about one kilometre into Thai territory.

The Thai military unit asked the Cambodian side to leave the border but the attempt failed.  As the Thai military unit was moving out of the area to report to their commander, the Cambodian military unit opened fire at them.

The Thai troops returned fire, resulting in two injuries on the Thai side, while one Cambodian soldier was wounded in his hand.

The spokesman said situation has now returned to normalcy.

He said the Thai military initiated high-level contact with the Cambodian military and the Cambodian side agreed to investigate the matter and reaffirmed that the incident would be contained without any further armed confrontation.

He said the Cambodian side also affirmed that it would coordinate more closely with the Thai side to prevent any recurrence of similar incidents.
