TV newsman on sick leave after Chuwit attack

Doctors say TV news anchorman Visal Dilokwanit may need up to seven days to recover from injuries inflicted on him during Thursday's altercation with an enraged Chuwit Kamolvisit.

After a heated studio interview, Bangkokgovernor hopeful Chuwit elbowed and stomped Visal in an attack in front of TV channel staff.

Visal yesterday reported a headache and pain around the nape of his neck. "My doctor recommends I stay in the hospital for at least two days," he said from his patient's room at Samitivej Hospital.

He plans to take sick leave until he fully recovers and another news presenter has taken his place on air.

According to a Channel 3 executive, Dr Tiraporn Chaijinda had suggested Visal will need seven days to recover.

Chuwit admitted yesterday it was not the right thing to attack Visal and he hoped younger people would not follow his example.

He was speaking after he made merit in dedication to his Karmic fellows, including Visal, in the morning.

Chuwit then went on to deliver a speech for his gubernatorial campaign at around 7 pm.

Thong Lor Police Superintendent Colonel Jirapat Pumijit said investigators would question Chuwit before considering pressing charges. "We will ensure justice to both sides," he said.

After the incident on Thursday, Chuwit said he had lost control because Visal treated him with disrespect.

However, Visal insisted he just did his job objectively. The news anchorman, who has lodged a complaint with police about the assault, said he is now considering suing Chuwit for defamation
