Some milk-based products deemed safe, returning to shelves

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has confirmed that the Lotte koala-shaped chocolate cream cookies and M&M chocolate made in China are safe for consumption.

"We will issue certification and allow these products to return to shelves," FDA secretary-general Chatree Banchuin said yesterday.

In recent weeks, several products from China that contain milk have been pulled off the shelves in various countries, including Thailand, after several infants in the mainland reportedly died after consuming milk tainted with melamine.

Thailand's FDA banned the sale of many milk-based products from China pending results of lab tests. Test results for the cookies and the M&M candies were released yesterday.

Meanwhile, many giant businesses yesterday sought to calm consumers' fears.

Unilever Thai Trading, which distributes Wall's ice cream, yesterday announced that most of its products were made in Thailand.

"We have already conducted lab tests for products made in China, and results show that they are free of melamine," the company's statement said.

Nestle also said its milk and milk formulas were safe. "We have stringent quality-control measures and our products are in line with FDA standards," the company announced.
