To sir, with love

Sex fiends and other "inappropriate" teachers will be weeded out of universities.

The Higher Education Commission is carrying out random checks at 20 schools to ensure proper recruitment.

It's amending its minimum requirements for lecturers and staff to "discourage" the employment of inappropriate people.

Commission chief Sumet Yaemnoon says it's been getting lots of complaints about inappropriate behaviour by lecturers and university staff. This includes sexual harassment. There have been six complaints of sexual misconduct. One lecturer has quit.

The commission sends in "discrete" investigators when it gets a complaint.

The commission is asking universities and higher-education institutions to trawl back five years for more complaints.

The commission has 10 names of lecturers on a blacklist that universities can check before employing staff.

It says schools cannot employ lecturers that have been dismissed from other jobs and universities are to check with the police for criminal records, too.
