Officials hit hard in South

Violence in the far South continues unabated, largely due to complacency on the part of officials, in spite of claims by political leaders in Bangkok the security situation has improved.

Speaking on condition of anonymity, a senior security official in the region said 17 of the 41 people killed last month were government officials. And 42 of 78 people injured were also officials.

The trend was the centre of discussion in Songkhla on Saturday between security planners from the Southern Border Provinces Administrative Centre (SBPAC), the Internal Security Operation Command (Isoc), the Army and other agencies assigned to the Malayspeaking South.

It was agreed that the security agencies have become complacent for reasons unknown.

Moreover, the July 17 televised announcement on the end of the insurgency by three unknown, selfproclaimed insurgent leaders was also discussed. It was agreed that the incident was a hoax but the meeting did not discuss what action would be taken against government officials involved in what was billed as a hoax by Chetta Thanajaro, the former defence minister who leads the Puea Pandin Party in the coalition.
