Choosak: Chaiya was not banned from politics

Chaiya Sasomsap was appointed as Commerce Minister despite the July 9 Consitution Tribunal ruling that disqualified him from holding office because the court did not ban him from politics, PM's Office Minister Choosak Sirinin said on Monday.

Chaiya ended his job as Health Minister after he was found to have violated the constitutional ban on the five per cent cap on equity stakes. His wife's shares exceeded the cap and he failed to declare this within 30 days upon assuming office in February.

Choosak said the court did not deprive Chaiya of his right to take up any political post because Chaiya cited that he committed the offence because he misunderstood the law.

"The state agency responsible in disqualifying him did not request the court to remove his political rights,'' Choosak said.
