He revealed after the screeningcommittee meeting yesterday that the committee discussed ways of procuring 6,000 new NGV buses, for example, through leasing or purchasing.
In this regard, he said, the committee had assigned the Office of the National Economic and Social Development Board to study the positive and negative points as well as the strengths of each choice before submitting the matter to the committee again on August 8.
Sanan said the committee had also assigned the office to con
Žsider whether a number of non airconditioned buses equipped with natural gas fuelled engines should remain or not.For example, he said, about 1,000 of the existing non aircondiŽtioned buses with NGV engines might be kept as an alternative for the public as they had cheaper ticket prices.
In addition, he said, the committee had discussed the converŽsion of 3,500 existing buses owned by the Bangkok Mass Transit Authority (BMTA) to NGV buses. The BMTA had advised that it would not be worthwhile as the installation of NGV engines in the old buses could cause many problems.
However, Sanan said that the committee had noticed seven areas for the improvement of the BMTA
's efficiency and quality of services that the BMTA would clarify for the committee on August 8.The topics include timetables for 145 bus routes, the early retirement programme, the budget for leasing NGV buses, the electronicticketing system, the development of quality services and the effect of 6,000 new NGV buses on other services.
