1,250 gifted computers for provincial schools

The National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) and the Education Ministry will run a joint pilot project donating personal computers (PCs) to primary schools in a bid to bridge the digital divide.

NTC deputy secretary-general Visakorn Tadtiemrom said the "Fulfilling Dreams by Sharing PCs" project will be tested in Maha Sarakham province with 1,250 PCs donated to 250 primary schools in Kosum Phisai district and Kudrang sub-district.

People can drop off PCs for the project over the next four months at NTC headquarters, Advanced Info Service, Total Access Communication and True. Donated PCs must have a Pentium 4 chip and a 15-inch screen. The NTC will provide teacher training, to maximise PC use.

The province contains 1,812 primary and secondary schools, more than 10,000 teachers and about 272,000 students. Education Ministry data show that Kosum Phisai district and Kudrang sub-district now have 69 students for every existing PC.

From 2005-06, figures show that 32,000 elementary schools across the Kingdom owned 120,000 PCs.

"If the project proves successful, we'll expand it to other provinces," Visakorn said.
