
The project has been rejected several times, due to concerns in the transparency of the bidding as well as the high leasing costs.
However, the Cabinet approved the roadmap of bio plastic industry development, which would entail investment of Bt1.8 billion.
"This would bring a facelift to the Thai industry. Strategic innovations will be encouraged, particularly in the agricultural sector. This would also encourage the birth of new environmental-friendly industries," said National Innovation Agency Director Supachai Lorlowhakarn.
According to NIA, bioplastic, from corn starch, accounts for only 1 per cent of total plastic demand which is 200 million tonnes per annum. Worldwide bioplastic capacity is only 360,000 tonnes per year.
