Appeal on behalf of refugees

The Karen Women's Organisation (KWO) yesterday called on Thai authorities to review their decision to repatriate 58 Karen refugees from a border camp.

In its statement, the KWO expressed concern about the safety of the Karen, mostly women and children, who were forced by Thai soldiers back into Burma.

The villagers had sought shelter in the camp in Mae Hong Son in April, fleeing an armed struggle in their homeland.

The support group said it was cruel to return the refugees in the middle of the rainy season.
