Spice up your tongue
Once you've satisfied your soul at Prambanan Temple, one of the great Hindu shrines in Central Java and a World Heritage site, you should satisfy your tummy at the Prambanan Garden.
The openair restaurant, with a panoramic view of the temple - beautiful when it's illuminated at night - is a wonderful place to enjoy the local dishes.
At lunchtime the restaurant lays out a buffet that includes fried soybean cake and deepfried shrimp.
Highly recommended are the satay - pieces of grilled chicken on bamboo skewers - and the noodle soup.
On my weeklong trip around Indonesia I enjoyed many platters of satay with varying tastes, but at the Prambanan Garden it's unforgettable. The meat is tender and juicy and not too oily. Eat it with rice crackers for a real treat.
The noodle soup looks ordinary, but it's full of flavour, the perfect dish with the local chilli sauce.
The Prambanan Garden is at Jl Raya JogjaSolo Km 16, about 17 kilometres from downtown Prambanan. Call (02) 744 96178.
