Title-holders Greece crash out as Spain advance

Title-holders Greece crashed out of Euro 2008 after sliding to a 1-0 defeat to Russia, while Spain became the fourth team to book a place in the quarter-finals on Saturday.

The Euro 2004 winners, who were also beaten by Sweden 2-0 on Tuesday, now have no hope of qualifying from Group D.

The Greece defeat to Russia in Salzburg means Spain, who overcome Sweden 2-1 with a late David Villa goal in Innsbruck, will win the group and avoid a meeting with the Netherlands in the quarter-finals.

The Dutch in the quarter-finals will face either Russia or Sweden who meet in Innsbruck Wednesday in a match which will decide who finishes second in the group.

Valencia striker Villa's goal in stoppage time - his fourth of the tournament - gave Spain a deserved 2-1 win over Sweden.

"A draw would have been really unfair since we had the best chances and they just wanted to get a draw," Villa said.

Liverpool striker Fernando Torres had given Spain an early lead, only for Zlatan Ibrahimovic to equalize for Sweden before half-time.

In Salzburg, Konstantin Zyryanov scored the winner in the 33rd minute in Russia's 1-0 victory over Greece.

Greece goalkeeper Antonis Nikopolidis was at fault when he chased a ball heading away from his goal and was caught out by Russia's Sergey Semak whose overhead cross found an unmarked Zyryanov.

Greece's German coach Otto Rehhagel said: "I am not that disappointed as I knew beforehand what we can do. I always said that everything had to be right to beat Russia. The goal was practically an own goal, but the Russians are excellent sprinters and players."

He said he would not make any decisions on his future at this stage. "An hour after the game every person is beyond reason. So now we will play our last game, then I will go on holiday and then I will look at things."

Elswehere Germany's Lukas Podolski was kept out of full training to protect his injured foot but is expected to be fit for Monday's crucial Group B match against Austria.

Podolski, who has scored all three of Germany's goals at Euro 2008, avoided tackling and did not take part in a training match.

Defenders Philipp Lahm (injured calf) and Heiko Westermann (injured hand) both took part in the full session at Tenero and should be available.

Left-back Marcell Jansen remains a doubt with a shoulder injury and his training Saturday was restricted to the fitness room.

Germany need a point from the Group B match in Vienna to qualify for the quarter-finals but will go out if they lose.

Austrian football legend Hans Krankl said he wants Austria to open a new chapter in its footballing history by beating Germany.

"They shall be heroes, they shall erase Cordoba," Krankl said in reference to Austria's famous defeat of Germany in Cordoba, Argentina, at the 1978 World Cup.

Since then, Austria have beaten their northern neighbour only once.

In Lausanne, around 5,000 Dutch fans turned up in the Stade Olympique to watch the team train, a day after the Netherlands' 4-1 thrashing of France at Euro 2008.

All 23 players in the squad took part in the relaxed public training session, held at the Stade Olympiqiue.

Europe's governing body UEFA dismissed media reports that the organization's president Michel Platini had met with Spanish officials to discuss the possibility of the country hosting the 2012 Euro tournament.
