Opposition files motion to impeach

Opposition chief whip Sathit Wongnontoey yesterday filed a motion to initiate impeachment proceedings against PM's Office Minister Jakrapob Penkair.

"After the opposition announced its preparations for impeachment, Jakrapob had shown no remorse and continues to act in defiance of the law, the 2007 Constitution and ethical standards," Sathit said.

Even if Jakrapob resigned, graft proceedings against him would continue, although the impeachment inquiry will end, he said.

The motion, lodged with the Office of the Senate Speaker, contends that Jakrapob intentionally violated constitutional provisions relating to media freedom and carried out his duties in an unlawful manner.

Senate Speaker Prasopsuk Boondet said he would complete the checking of the motion on Friday before forwarding it to the National Counter Corruption Commission to open an inquiry to determine the cause for impeachment.
