Fire in the sky

To build a rocket in Isaan, you don't need Nasa, or even the assistance of scientists.

Published on April 26, 2008

On May 10 and 11, some 100 handmade rockets, or bung fai, will be firing into the sky over Yasothon province. The annual festival is staged to honour the God of Rain - and remind the deity that the growing season is coming soon. It usually draws upwards of 50,000 spectators. Also featured in the celebration are traditional music, colourful parades and mud dances.
