Whips start work on first draft

The working group of government whips tasked with preparing the Constitution amendment draft met yesterday in a bid to complete its task by the end of the week.

PM's Office Minister Choosak Sirinin chaired the meeting, which discussed changes to the entire charter, except the first two chapters involving general provisions and His Majesty the King.

The group also assigned its subcommittee to deal with transitional clauses involving independent organisations appointed after the 2006 coup that are still operational, said Sukhumpong Ngonkham, vice chairman of the government whips coordination committee.

He said the first amendment draft should be available today for all coalition parties to consider for possible alterations. If all agree, the coalition's draft will be submitted along with its motion for a Parliament deliberation, expected to be filed before the end of the current session on May 19.

Coalition parties have been asked to give their written recommendations on charter changes by next week, said Samart Kaewmeechai, secretary to the panel.
