Prosecutors can retain independent status despite charter rewrite: Choosak

The People Power Party has no plans to revamp the Office of the Attorney General as part of the constitutional chages as has been speculated, PM's Office Minister Choosak Sirinin said on Wednesday.

Choosak was reacting to a concern raised by public prosecutors that their office would be deprived of independent status and moved back to be under the jurisdiction of the Justice Ministry.

The main coalition party is planning to use the suspended 1997 charter as the model for charter rewrite, he said, adding that public prosecutors can keep the independent status by retaining the provisions of the 2007 Constitition applicable to them.

When the 1997 charter was promulgated, public prosecutors reported to the Justice Ministry but this could change, he said.
