Thaksin brother-in-law groomed

The Police Commission yesterday reinstated a brother-in-law of ex-premier Thaksin Shinawatra before promoting him to the position of deputy national police chief, seen as a move to pave the way for him to lead the police service in October.

General Prieopan Damapong returned to active duty following a year-long hiatus, as he was seconded to the PM's Office in the wake of the September 2006 coup. Prieopan's reinstatement was sanctioned by Prime Minister Samak Sundaravej in his capacity as commission chairman.

In the same order, Lt-General Chalor Chuwong, seen as a Thaksin ally, was also returned to the service to assume the position of assistant national police chief.

"Prieopan and Chalor have been reinstated to boost the efficiency of the police service," said police spokesman Lt-General Watcharapol Prasanratchakit.

The two's reinstatement will take effect following the issuing of a royal command.

The commission approved a new line-up of 118 senior police officers, many seen as close to the ousted Thaksin government.
