Top generals play down coup speculation

Defence permanent secretary General Winai Phattiyakul on Tuesday pleaded for calm as he saw no conditions to warrant a military intervention, dismissing the prophecies by two astrologers that the country might plunge into a political mayhem triggering a coup.

"Although any warning should be heeded, I believe all sides can find a best way to resolve their differences," he said in reference to the debate on constitutional changes.

Air Force chief Air Chief Marshal Chalit Pukbhasuk said he had no comment on the coup speculation. He said he made a private trip to attend a merit-making ceremony organised by astrologer Warin Buawiratlert in Chiang Mai on Sunday. He ruled out any linkage with Warin's coup prediction.
