Islamic artworks get a rare viewing

An exhibition on "The Arts of Islam: Treasures from the Nasser D Khalili Collection" is on view until April 30 at the Emirates Palace Hotel in Abu Dhabi.

The selected works from the Khalili trove, many of which have never been publicly shown before, include an exquisitely detailed panoramic watercolour of Mecca, painted in 1843.

Among the themes of the show are the development of the arts associated with the Koran, especially calligraphy, miniature painting and the weaving of carpets and textiles.

Other groups of objects focus on the talismanic use of verses of the Koran, science in the service of religion, horsemanship, falconry and the Islamic world's interaction with Europe.

On stage in Singapore

Singapore Arts Festival, long recognised for its bold and innovative artistic collaborations at the cutting-edge of contemporary arts, is scheduled to run from May 23 to June 22.

Among the dance luminaries taking part are Larbi Cherkaoui from Belgium, the Slovene National Theatre's Opera and Ballet from Maribor and Lujbljana and La La La Human Steps from Canada.

Audiences will also be impressed by the complexity of youth, modernity and identity issues addressed in the dramatic creations by leading European director Haris Pasaovic's East West Theatre Company (Bosnia & Herzegovina) and Indian theatre maker Ratan Thiyam's Chorus Repertory Theatre of Manipur.

The music programme includes Howard Shore's "The Lord of the Rings Symphony" by the Singapore Festival Orchestra and jazz luminary Paolo Frescu.
