Suranan Wongvithaya-kamjorn, secretary-general of the National Telecommunications Commission, said last week that the watchdog had already instructed its consumer institute to come up with an action plan.
Prawit Leesatapornwongsa, the institute's director, said the institute would conduct public opinion surveys on maintaining or banning caller ID.
It will work out measures to prevent unwelcome calls from unidentified private numbers and submit the plan for the regulator's consideration in two weeks' time.
Many users have been annoyed by contacts wanting to sell them something or in some cases sexually harassing them.
Prawit said consumers who do not want to receive calls from telemarketers using private numbers might be allowed to register their mobile phone numbers with a certain party.
Then telemarketers have to check this number list and are not allowed to dial a registered number or can contact it only during permitted periods.
