Rice exports jump 71.69%

Thailand's rice exports during January 1 and March 21 reached 2.8 million tonnes, worth US$1.22 billion.

Compared to the same period last year, the volume rose 71.69 per cent  from 1.64 million tonnes while the dollar-denominated value was up 95.94 per cent from $623 million. In baht term, the export value in the period totalled Bt40 billion, or 84.36 per cent up from Bt21.8 billion from the same period a year earlier.

Deputy Commerce Minister Viroon Tejapaiboon attributed the sharp increase to the increase in average export prices to $433 per tonne, up from $380 million last year. Due to higher demand, domestic prices have also risen Bt500-Bt600 per tonne per week. No less than 1 million tonnes of rice has been exported monthly since last October.

He also noted on Wednesday that Thailand's rice export would reach the target at 8.75 million tonnes.

On concerns of speculation which could lead to domestic shortages, he said the Foreign Trade Department is monitoring the situation and coming up with policies to balance the exports and domestic consumption.
