
Deputy Commerce Minister Viroon Tejapaiboon attributed the sharp increase to the increase in average export prices to $433 per tonne, up from $380 million last year. Due to higher demand, domestic prices have also risen Bt500-Bt600 per tonne per week. No less than 1 million tonnes of rice has been exported monthly since last October.
He also noted on Wednesday that Thailand's rice export would reach the target at 8.75 million tonnes.
On concerns of speculation which could lead to domestic shortages, he said the Foreign Trade Department is monitoring the situation and coming up with policies to balance the exports and domestic consumption.
