Man self-immolates in Burma protest

Rangoon: A man set himself on fire in political protest at Rangoon's famed Shwedagon Pagoda, according to witnesses.

Gulfnews online reported the 24-year-old man shouted "Down with the military regime," before dousing himself with petrol on Sunday.

The incident is the first known case of self-immolation in Myanmar since the military junta took control of the country in 1962.

The man was hospitalized with severe burns and remains in critical condition, according to officials who spoke on condition of anonymity.
