GDP could fall on Thaksin-related chaos

Ousted prime minister Thanksin Shinawatra's return to Bangkok yesterday could wipe out some of the anticipated economic growth, if it leads to chaos, according to the University of Thai Chamber of Commerce.

The gross domestic product could expand only 4.5 per cent this year if divisiveness is growing between Thaksin's supporters and opponents, said Thanavath Phonvichai, the university's director of Economic and Business Forecasting Centre.

Previously, the centre forecast the country's economy would grow 4.5-5 per cent thanks to more political stability after the general election.

Political chaos could dent investment of both Thai and foreign investors as well as consumer spending., Thanavath said. He suggested Thaksin keep his commitment not to involve in politics.
