Endoscope disc surgery

Doctors at the Ramathibodi Hospital in Bangkok have achieved a first in Southeast Asia by replacing a patient's intervertebral discs through use of an endoscope.

Published on February 20, 2008

Dr Weeraphan Khuansong-tham, a neurosurgeon, said by using an endoscope they could reduce the size of open wounds to just 8 millimetres, instead of 3 to 5 centimetres through general surgery.

The new technique imposes less demand on patients who need to replace inter-vertebral discs - parts of their spinal bones and muscles do not need to be cut. The method would be used on another patient on July 8, when a team of German doctors arrives.
