Army top guns seek Samak

Top generals are trying to schedule a meeting with Prime Minister Samak Sundaravej to discuss two urgent issues - the security situation and the mid-year military reshuffle, Defence Ministry permanent secretary General Winai Phattiyakul said yesterday.

"Military commanders have sought the meeting to seek the government's direction regarding the implementation of security policies and the mid-year rotations," he said.

Winai said the military line-up had to be completed by March 15 in order to take effect in April, and that the armed forces needed clear guidelines on policy implementation from Samak, who is also the defence minister.

Winai expressed confidence that military rotations would proceed without a hitch as Samak had made it clear he would not allow political meddling in military affairs.

Talk time agreed

The government and the opposition have agreed on ground rules for next week's policy debate scheduled for Monday to Wednesday, opposition whip Jurin Laksanavisit said yesterday.

Of the 36 hours of floor time, 13 hours have been allocated for the opposition, 10 hours for the coalition, nine hours for members of the National Legislative Assembly and Cabinet members will have four hours for rebuttal.

The prime minister, the opposition leader and all party leaders will not have to observe the time cap.
