Health workers in protest

About 3,000 state workers attached to government clinics and public health stations across the country gathered yesterday outside the Public Health Ministry to demand promotions and adjustments to their positions.

The group said the new bureaucratic reform policy, which categorised them as general public servants was detrimental to them, because it would limit their careers and professional development.

The workers submitted their request to both ministers and senior officials before dispersing peacefully.

Public Health Minister Chaiya Sasom-sab promised to look into the matter.

The workers want district public health chiefs, and heads of clinics ranked as administrators, while those in lower posts but with bachelor's degrees should be ranked as technical advisers, they said.

The group also wants a new law that would better support their careers, and to delay a decentralisation plan which would transfer 22 public

offices in many provinces to local administrative organisations.
