House speaker to petition for royal advice on Parliament relocation

A petition will be submitted for the royal advice of HM the King concerning to the relocation of Parliament building, House Speaker Yongyuth Tiyapairat said on Monday.

"I was born under the reign of His Majesty and would ask for the royal advice as blessing for Parliament," he said.

He insisted he would not do anything to offend the monarch.

He said he would involve all parties concerned to prepare for the relocation from the present site located within the grounds of Ananda Samakhom Throne Hall to the plot to be vacated by the Army Ordnance Department in Nonthaburi.

Earlier Yongyuth said he would consult with authorities concerned to determine whether the appointment of MPs as government whips would violate a consitutional ban against lawmakers holding executive office.

"I think the Government Administration Act is the basis to determine whether government whips are an executive position," he said.

Yongyuth said he would proceed on the issue with caution in order to comply with the 2007 Constitution. He added that he anticipated no problem in regard to the appointment of opposition whips.
