Govt revenue above target in 4 months

Government revenue in the first four months of the 2008 fiscal year totaleld Bt421.7 billion, up 0.6 or Bt2.7 billion above the target, said Somchai Sajjapongse, advisor to the Fiscal Policy Office.

The figures are 4.4 per cent up from the same period last year.

Somchai attributed the increase the better-than-expected revenue collection by the three major departments - Revenue, Excise and Customs.

In January 2008, government revenue of Bt96.4 billion was however 0.6 per cent or Bt570 million below target (and 6.9 per cent lower than the same period last year). Individual income taxes were Bt2.37 billion or 9.9 per cent below target, due to the lower deposit rates which cut the witholding taxes on deposit returns. Excise taxes on vehicle also dropped as the public delayed the decision to buy cars, awaiting the launch of vehicles compatible with gasohol E20. Moreover, state enterprises and other state agencies also remitted the lower-than-expected amount.
