Best of the week

Belgian artist Peggy Wauters makes her Bangkok debut with "Myths and Monstrosities", opening at 6pm on Thursday at 100 Tonson Gallery.

Wauters's sculptural ceramics and works on paper are inspired by society's "others" - prisoners, orphans and the disabled. Her provocative and contemplative humanoid forms show signs of mutation and disintegration, a metaphor perhaps for profound psychological states. Human frailty and folly emerge in a vision steeped in almost perverse humour, as Wauters ranges from the mocking to the sympathetic.

Meet the artist at the opening party on Valentine's Day when she's happy to meet any saintly guests who share their love by adopting "an orphan". The opening party will be documented by Top Changtrakul, shooting video and taking photos.

The show runs until April 20. The gallery is at 100 Soi Tonson off Phloenchit Road. It is open from 11am to 7pm Thursday to Sunday.

Art Space Germany

While many German artists moved abroad in the 1950s and 1960s, artists of many nationalities pursued their art in Germany. The travelling exhibition, "ArtSpace Germany", at Silpakorn University, shows the work of these trend-setting artists.

Among them, conceptual artist Joseph Kosuth, video-art pioneer Nam June Paik and interactive artist Christine Hill have their works in the collections of New York's Guggenheim and London's Tate Gallery.

Other participants are Armando, Tony Cragg, Ayse Erkman, Magdalena Jetalova, Per Kirkeby, MarieJo Lafontaine, Simone Magos, Giuseppe Spagnulo, Wawrzyniec Tokarski and Herman de Vries.

Organised by the Goethe Institut and promoted by Germany's Institute for Foreign Relations, the Silpakorn show will feature lectures on "Space Art Ritual" by Asst Prof Thanes Wongyannava on Thursday and "Internationalism in German Art of the 20th Century" by Axel Feuss on February 18. Both talks are at 1pm.

The exhibition runs from 10am to 7pm daily until February 27 in the Faculty of Painting, Sculpture and Graphic Arts Gallery.
