More than 17 people have now lodged complaints claiming wrongful arrest and torture by a group known as the "Border Patrol police ring".

Published on February 4, 2008

One, a Surat Thani woman, was said to have been unable to speak for three months after being given electric shocks last year made by a team of rogue policemen, allegedly lead by Captain Nat Chonnithiwanich.

Jaree Dokmaihom is now in court custody at the provincial prison for a drug-related charge which she claims was falsely laid against her by the gang. She lodged a complaint with prison officials after the news about Nat's arrest broke two weeks ago. Jaree has been held with another suspect, Wanya Khongsak. Both women said they had been tortured to sign a confession that they possessed 1,000 amphetamine tablets.

The women identified Lt-Colonel Surakit Khlai-udom, the most senior member of the gang, as one of the men who arrested them along with a civilian businessman.

Victims of the gang have lodged 22 complaints in the South alone - four in Nakhon Si Thammarat, seven in Chumphon, two in Krabi and nine in Surat Thani.
