Angkarn begins with a bang

Thailand were dealt a big blow following the late withdrawal of Athens bronze medallist Suriya Prasarthinpimai but his replacement, Angkarn Chomphuphoung, got the home team's campaign off to a winning start in the Asian Olympic qualifying tournament yesterday.

Middleweight Suriya withdrew, following a motorbike accident on Sunday, causing the wushu exponent-turned-boxer Angkarn to move down a division.

Angkarn acquitted himself very well in his first bout in the 75kg middleweight division in front of the home crowd at the Dhurakij Pundit Unive-rsity gymnasium as he overcame Kyrgyzstan's Bekzatbek Isaev with relative ease.

Angkarn will next face a strong opponent in Hassan Karkardi of Iran, who forced the referee to stop his bout against Maovaddav Abbas of Pakistan in the second round, having outboxed the opponent from the outset.

Bantamweight Worapoj Petchkum, the Athens silver medallist, will open his campaign today against South Korea's Han Soon-chul.

Meanwhile, Amateur Boxing Association of Thailand president General Taweep Jantaroj dismissed allegations that Thai boxers had used banned substances in the recent SEA Games.
