One dead after clash at steel mill project site in Prachuab Khiri Khan

Supporters and opponents of the Saha Viriya steel mill project in Prachuab Khiri Khan clashed violently on Thursday, resulting in one dead and four wounded.

Some 200 police were deployed at the mill site in Bang Saphan district to quell the violence.

Opponents of the project, dressed in green tshirts, gathered in protest at the project site at about 2pm after learning that bulldozers and trucks would start levelling the area in preparation for the project.

Upon learning of the protest, the project's supporters, dressed in red, rushed to the site.

Both sides were armed with sticks, stones and slingshots.

When they met, they yelled at each other and the situation became tense when both groups began hurling their weapons at about 2.45pm.

The first group of police deployed at the site failed to disperse the groups.

Then some supporters of the project, mostly teenagers, fired shots at their opponents.

When the clash ended, a project supporter was found dead and four others were injured.

Afterward, provincial authorities and police came together in an urgent meeting and agreed to deploy more police into the area to prevent more conflicts.
