Private sector embraces nuclear power

Private companies have shown supports to the planned construction of a nuclear power plant, saying that Thailand needs to go forward with the plan amid rising energy prices.

At the seminaron Thursday on "Nuclear power plants for Thai economic sustainability", Boonsithi Chokwatana, chairman of Saha Group, said he wanted the nuclear power plants to take shape earlier than the Energy Ministry's schedule.

"Nuclear power generating is an interesting business. If any company is embarking on this, I'm ready to subscribe for its shares. The industry has a long way to go. Buildings could have their own generators," Boonsithi said.

Kobkarn Wattanavrangkul, president of Toshiba Thailand as vice chairman of Thai Chamber of Commerce's energy committee, is also hopeful that the new government would promote the nuclear power generating.

"If the government sees the benefits of this, it should announce so. If the government goes ahead with this, the private sector would not let it go alone. We're ready to support the move," she said.
