Thais remain in title hunt with gold rush

The local men's 4x100m relay team rewrote their own record in the T53-54 category to defend their gold medal, as the hosts remain on track in their chase for the overall title in the third edition of the Asean Para Games in Nakhon Ratchasima.

Paralympic Games gold medallist Prawat Wahoran along with team-mates  Suphachai Koysub, Saichon Konjen and Pichet Krungget timed 52.24sec, eclipsing the old mark of 53.80sec they set in the Manila Games.

Thais also dominated the other relay categories, winning the men's 4x100m in the T11-13 category, the men's 4x100m in the T42-46 category and the women's 4x100m in the T11-13 division. The Kingdom reaped 12 gold, out of 40, in the track and field events yesterday. But it was Malaysia who dominated with a haul of 19 gold medals.

Wanna Ladee, a double-gold medallist in the 2005 Manila edition, who caused a stir then by hiding her pregnancy during competition, is to kick off action today in discus and shot put as the defending champion.

She is also set to take part in the javelin event.

"I hope to win all the three events, but it will be difficult because my record in discus is not impressive,'' said Wanna, who named her daughter Manila.

Thailand dominated the pool sweeping 21 gold in 31 categories.

The hosts top the medals tally with 85 gold. Malaysia and Vietnam have 28 and 25 gold medals respectively.
