Doubles joy for unlucky Tamarine

Tamarine Tanasugarn recovered from the heart-breaking singles defeat and teamed up with Japan's Aiko Nakamura to win their opening doubles match yesterday.

Published on January 17, 2008

Tammy and her Japanese partner, who played together several times last season, moved past Lourdes Dominguez Lino and Arantxa Parra Santonja of Spain 6-3 7-5 during windy conditions on court No 19.

It was a good compensation for the Thai veteran who came so close to an upset win over world No 20 Sybille Bammer of Austria in the singles first round, only to let the chance slip.

After cruising through the first set 6-3, the Asian duo found themselves in trouble in the second, falling behind 3-5. They were just a point away from losing the set before putting up stiff resistance, reeling off four games in a row.

"We played very well and had a good teamwork. We played better at crucial points although it was so windy,'' said Tamarine who partnered Nakamura to reach the Japan Open in Tokyo last year.

In the next round on Friday, they will play either 10th seeds Anabel Medina Garrigues and Virginia Ruano Pascual of Spain or Germany's Angelique Kerber and Austrian Yvonne Meusburger.
