Zaragoza announce Garitano as replacement for sacked Fernandez

Madrid (dpa) - Troubled Spanish Liga football club Zaragoza announced on Monday evening that their new coach will be Ander Garitano.

Garitano, former midfielder for Zaragoza and Athletic Bilbao, will take over on Tuesday from Victor Fernandez, who was sacked late on Sunday.

The 38-year-old Basque has, up to now, been coaching one of the Zaragoza youth teams. He has no first division coaching experience, and now has a hard job on his hands bringing unity to a very divided and demoralized dressing room.

Garitano was presented to the media on Monday evening by Zaragoza president Eduardo Bandres and sporting director Miguel Pardeza, who played alongside Garitano at the club in the late 1990s.

Zaragoza are a disappointing 12th in La Liga, despite all their summer spending. The final nail in Fernandez' coffin was Sunday's 2-2 draw at home to Mallorca.
